In Latvia, only 25 km from Riga, along the Riga-Tallinn highway there is an island in Lake Dzirnezers – Chief’s Island. The lake is connected to river Gauja through a canal, which in turn is connected to the Baltic Sea.
This island together with the lake once belonged to the Count Ernst Reinhold von Mengden, who was the chamberlain of the Empress of Russia Elizabeth I (daughter of Peter the Great and Catherine I) and a special trust person of the Empress of Russia, similarly as the Count S.G. Naryshkin to Peter the Great and P. B. Sheremetev to Catherine II, etc.
In 1920s the Dzirnezers Lake (173 ha) together with the island (1.89 ha) was nationalised by the newly formed Latvian state.
During the time of the first Republic of Latvia, the island was honoured with a title of Particularly Beautiful Natural Place, since the President of Latvia of that time Karlis Ulmanis often spent his holidays there.
The former President is directly responsible for the current name of the island. In 1935 he together with some members of government and diplomats went to Carnikava Municipality, where they among other places visited Lake Dzirnezers, which they reached by motorboat through river Dzirnupīte. During this journey, the diplomats realised that the lake and its surroundings are actually very well known to them. Guests started to call it as the Lake of Diplomats and admired the piece and silence around it. When they reached the island of Lake Dzirnezers, everyone gathered under the centennial oak, where the Minister of Agriculture of that time addressed everyone and named the island as the Chief’s Karlis Ulmanis Island. In everyday speech citizens call it the Ulmanis Island, but the official name is Chief’s Island. The new owner will have the chance to name it anew!
Now this former aristocratic property is up for sale and you have a chance to buy it! This is the only private island in 200 km radius around Riga and the only private island in Latvia, which has access to the Baltic Sea and Riga Canal. Besides, buying this property also means regular annual income of 50 000 EUR – which means that within 20 years you will earn back the whole amount you spent for the island. In addition, the price of the island is negotiable, since, depending on the payment method, it is possible to regain up to 60% in form of taxes.
The island is a Neolithic Age Dune in an oval form. The total area is 1,98 ha, the closest bank is 350 m away. There is a beach at southern part of the island, but most of its territory is covered with 100-year-old pine forest. Seasonal fluctuations in water levels are minimal.
The highest point of the island is 15 m above the sea level and it has a wonderful view of the surrounding water area and other closest surroundings. With the help of the submarine communications cable, the island is equipped with electricity. The island also has drinking water available.
There are no problems with construction works either – the previous buildings are still preserved there, in total 16 wooden buildings of various sizes, as well as foundations of one round building. It is allowed to build unlimited number of boat docks, floating houses (saunas), etc.
