The main function of a butterfly valve is to control the flow of fluid by either allowing or restricting the passage of fluid through the valve. When the valve is fully open, the disc is turned parallel to the flow direction, allowing unobstructed flow. Conversely, when the valve is closed, the disc is rotated perpendicular to the flow direction, blocking the flow completely.

The working principle of a butterfly valve involves the rotation of the disc to control the flow. When the valve handle or actuator is turned, the disc is rotated to the desired position. The disc can be operated manually using a handle or automatically through an actuator, which can be electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic.

As the disc is turned, the flow passage changes accordingly. When the disc is parallel to the flow direction, the fluid flows freely through the valve. Conversely, when the disc is perpendicular to the flow direction, the fluid is blocked, preventing its passage.

The disc of a butterfly valve can also be adjusted to control the flow rate by partially opening or closing the valve. This allows for more precise flow control compared to simply fully opening or closing the valve.
